VERNON, Oct. 30, — It again becomes our solemn duty to chronicle the death of another of our lifelong residents. William Henry Etheridge, more familiarly known as Colonel Etbertdge, died at his home in this village at 3:45 P. M. Thursday, death resulting from uraemic couvulsious, from which he never regained consciousness. Although he had been in poor health for a long time, he was usually able to continue in his position in the wood working department of Judson Bros.' carriage works, and was thus engaged when attacked with illness at 2:30 P. M. Wednesday. He was immediately removed to his home, where he was made as comfortable as possible, but his disease baffled the skill of all the physicians. The deceased was 51 years of age, was born and had always resided in this place. Upon the formation of the 146th Rgiment, New York Volunteers, he enlisted and marched with it to the front in October of 1862, and participated in several of the memorable battles in which that notable regiment was engaged. He was a charter member of Captain James E. Jenkins Post, 526, G. A. R., which organization takes its name from one of his gallant commanders. Early last spring he received the appoiutment from the board of trustees, as chief engineer of the Vernon fire department, which position he still held at the time of his death. Besides an estimable and loving wife who survives him, he leaves two sisters, Mrs. George D. Torrey of this place and Mrs. Albert Hills of Turner, Ill., three daughters, Helen E. and Anna C of this place and Clara F., lately of Turner, Ill., and two sons, Hubart S. and Willie, also of this place. The sincere sympathy of a large circle of friends and acquaintances is extended to the bereft famny in their great affliction. Rev. Charles W. Rice of the Presbyterian church will officiate at the funeral, which will be held at his late residence at 1:30 P. M. Monday. Jenkins Post, G. A. R., will attend the services in a body. Interment will be made in the cemetery at this place.

Vernon, Oct. 24,— A beautiful life came to a close Tuesday evening at 6 o'clock at the family home on Front street when Mrs. Margaret S. Etheridge widow of William H. Etheridge passed peacefully on after an illness dating back nearly three years, and which marks the ending of a long and helpful career spent in good works and usefulness — the rarest of gifts. Her ever ready and sweet thoughtfulness for others, with never a thought for self and a joyful spirlt radiating perfect contentment as she approached the sunset of life, are memories that will long be cherished by her friends.
Mrs. Etheridge had much of this life's sorrows and sufferings, but in and through them all she manifested the sweetest spirit and a most beautiful and wonderful patience. The spirit of youth was still hers and she always found the golden sunlight of life's long afternoon still bright and fair.
Aside from caring for her own family much of Mrs. Etheridge's life was devoted to nursing and practically every home in the village has at some time or other, been cheered by her sunny presence while acting in her chosen work. She has assisted at the birth of over 300 children aside from the many other forms of illness for which she cared.
Margaret Sterling Etheridge was of Scottish ancestry, having been born in Sterling, Scotland, October 7, 1841, a daughter of John and Ann Sterling. When a child of ten years she came with her parents to this country and since 1857 had been a resident of this village. In September 1862 she was married to William Henry Etheridge or "Colonel" Etheridge as he was familiarly known, a title given him by his comrades in the Civil War. The home they established was ever one of gracious hospitality and everyone loved to drop In for a friendly chat and the mistress of this home was never too busy or too tired to see her friends.
Mr. Etheridge was a member of Company B, 146th Regiment N. Y. Volunteers. His death occurred in 1880.
The surviving relatives are three daughters and two sons who have tenderly cared for and granted every wish during their mother's long illness; Mrs. George W. Frisble, Verona; Mrs. G. Arthur Earl, Miss Anna C. Etheridge, Hobart S. Etheridge, William H. Etheridge of Vernon; two grandchildren, Mrs. Ira Greenway, Vernon, and Miss Cleo Etheridge, Solsvllle; one brother, William Sterling of Oneida and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Etheridge was a member of the Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church and the Ladies' Aid Society and as long as health permitted was active in both. She was also a member of J. Knox Williams Camp, Sons of Veterans Auxiliary No. 66 in which she was much interested.

George W.Frisbie Was One Of Early Settlers In Community
VERONA Oct 6, -- George W. Frisbie, 98, oldest resident of this community and the last of a family of ten children, passed away at his home here Sunday noon.
He was born at Hartwick, Conn., April 3. 1832, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Frisbie. When Mr. Frisbie was four years old, he came with his parents to Verona coming by ox-team from Hartwick to Troy, and from there to Rome by canal. The father built a log house which had since served as the home of the son. He used often to tell of visits from Indians on their way from Vernon to Taberg.
Mr. Frisbie was a farmer and dairyman and until quite recently was engaged in his work. When quite young, he suffered a partial loss of hearing, but enjoyed good health until he was 92, when he underwent a serious operation. Since that time he had been subject to attacks of rheumatism.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church. His wife, who was formerly Miss Helen Ethridge, survives. He also leaves two nephews, Arthur N. Frisbie of Utica and Jesse W. Frisbie of Stockton, Calif., and a niece, Mrs. Emma Taft of Verona.

VERNON-Perhaps it is not a record, but it certainly is something of which one Vernon native, Miss Anna C. Ethridge, can be justly proud.
Miss Ethridge, 83, has pieced more than one hundred quilts during her span of life, the larger number of which she has quilted, many in intricate patterns of her own design, all indicating the work of a more than ordinary seamstress. Fifteen remain to be quilted.
Flowers in the various quilts are true to nature, as they were brought in from her own garden, and with the help of her niece, Mrs. Ira W. Greenway, were matched with the pieces of cloth, as to color and size.
Visiting at her home recently, the writer was privileged to see some of these quilts.
The Wedding Ring and Steps to the Altar as their names indicate are especially appropriate for the bride, who is setting up her own domicile.
Then there are several that might be classed as floral quilts, such as the pansy spread, the iris, the tulip, the Grandmother's Flower Garden, the Garden Bouquet, Rose of Sharon, Orchid and Butterfly, in which are lilies of the valley, cactus, poppies and many others.
One, the Friendship Quilt, is made entirely of pieces given her by friends, including her Sunday School teacher Mrs. Freeman, wife of the resident physician at that time, and Miss Cora Kirkland whose home was that of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Bartell.
The Double Irish Chain, made from pieces left from dresses and blouses worn by herself, sisters and brothers.
While in Girobel's Store in New York City she noticed a Dresden set of dishes being unpacked and secured permission to copy the design from a plate, and these blocks make her Dresden quilt.
The pattern for the Lone Star quilt was drawn by a soldier, in the Civil War. Incidentally, her father, the late Henry Etheridge, was a colonel in that war. The design of the King's Crown is more than a century old, the Mohawk Trail and others are also works of art.
Treasured among the quilts is the one made by her grandmother Mrs. William Etheridge, called the Philadelphia Pavement and although worn by use, its beauty is still there.
Another contains 22,000 pieces each the size of a postage stamp, and the pieces were cut in two, to form the border. A block took 100 pieces.
Another beautiful article is the blue and pink satin comforter, made for a friend, who passed away before it was completed.
Some of the patterns are from quilts exhibited in what was described as a "marvelous display of quilts at the exhibit in Springfield, Mass., in 1840, sponsored Jointly by the Connecticut Valley Historical Society and Springfield Sunday Union."
But this is not all, by any means [all] of Miss Etheridge's activities. For many years she followed nursing as an occupation, and at that time scarcely a home in this community, but that knew her kindly and efficient ministrations in times of sickness and death.
At one time she was a nurse in the Dr. W. P. Kingsley Hospital Rome, and as a reminder of those days, in one of her bedrooms stands a willow bassinet, holding what to all appearances is a baby. The doll, which ways [sic] over seven pounds, which she purchased in the Boston store in that city, and she laughingly tells how she fooled people on the train, when she brought it home unwrapped, who thought it a real baby.
It is also recalled that at Christmas time for many years, she reproduced "The Little Town of Bethlehem" in miniature, at her home, annually viewed by hundreds.
An adept at crocheting and embroidery, many pieces, such as tablecloths, luncheon sets, chair backs and fancy articles are to be found about the rooms in her home.

- Obituary (Utica Herald-Dispatch, NY, Monday, November 28, 1921)
At her home in Schuyler last evening at 8 o'clock occurred the death of Catharine Myers, widow of Edward Haver. She had been in poor health the past year or more, and on account of her advanced age was not able to withstand the two weeks' illness through which she passed, having been confined to her bed since that time. The deceased was born in Frankfort. June 12, 1842, and after her marriage to Mr. Haver moved to Schuyler, where the remainder of her life had been passed. She was a woman of most excellent qualities, kind and obliging neighbor and, when able, was about doing what she might for the good of the community. Much of her time was taken up in helping her husband in the store which he for many years conducted previous to his death five years ago. She is survived by one daughter, Miss Minnie, who has tenderly cared for the parent and is left to mourn her loss. There is also a sister, Miss Margaret Myers of Utica. They were the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Myers, who were among the early settlers of the vicinity. The funeral will be held from the home Wednesday afternoon ar 2 o'clock.

MYERS was born November 10th. 1841 at Frankfort, Herkimer Co. New York, where he went to school up to his twelfth year. From twelve to fourteen years of his age he drove a team of mules on the Erie Canal for his father, and in 1855 came toWisconsin with his parents, Frederick and Elizabeth Myers and settled in Prairie Du Sac., then later moved to Warner Creek Valley, Vernon Co., Wisconsin, where he lived in a log cabin and finished his schooling in a log school house.
On August 10th. 1862 he married Hattie H. Spear and almost immediately responded to the call of Abraham Lincoln and tendered his services to his country. He enlisted in Company K, 23 Wisconsin Vol. Infty., serving nearly three years in the war to free the slaves and perserve The Union.
For many years after the war he and his wife lived, loved and labored as pioneers - suffered many hardships in their struggle for livelihood, but by faith and persevarance they eventually overcame all obstacles and established themselves as outstanding personalities in their community.
Five children were born to them, all of which are now living -Margaret M. McCoy, Baraboo, Wis., Harvey A. Myers, North Freedom, Wisconsin, Walter C. Myers, Minneapolis, Minnestoa, Rollin F. Myers, Viola, Wisconsin, and Hattie L. Ingram, Los Angeles, Calif.
He has been a resident of Hillsboro for nearly forty years and was engaged in the general merchandise business untill abourt nineteen hundred ten when he retired.
He was a member of the Masons, the Eastern Star, the Odd Fellows, the Modern Woodmen, the G.A.R. - and during the many years of his affiliation with these societiers, he was elected to and credibly filled every office. Not alone in lodge work, but in many other capacities as a public spirited citizen, hewas ever active and served unselfishly so effectively and so faithfully that he endeared himself to the whole community.
Mrs. Myers passed away ten years ago (1915), leaving him to mourn her loss and bide the time he should follow. The summons came at 1:06 P. M. March 2nd., to which he responded "I 'mready", then quickly wrapped the drapery of his couch about him and lay himself down to everlasting slumber.
We laid him at rest beside his mate and the same tombstone that guards the graves of his father, his mother and his wife, also marks the last resting place of this good man who reached the high pinacle in life to be honored and loved by all who knew him.
