 - Newspaper Article (Geneva Gazette, NY, Friday, September 16, 1881)
Marvin Cline is a name not unfamiliar to the readers of the Citizen. He was born in the northwestern part of thia town, on the old Cline homestead, in 1820, and for many years was engaged in active mercantile transactions in this village. In the year 1867 he went to Buffalo and engaged in malting.
During the years of active commercial life he was considered a man of superior business qualifications, of sound judgement, and to a marked degree reliable and systematic in his business habits. Within three years past, however, there has been a change. His business at Buffalo has been transacted in an irregular manner and his general actions have not been in accordance with his customary mode of life. Being despondent at times he has resorted to stimulants and medicinal preparations for relief. Within the past year he has spent more or less time in this village and came from Bufialo the last time four weeks ago last Saturday, since which he has been stopping at the home of his sister, Mrs. John Eacker.
For a number of days past he had complained of being in an unfit condition for work; being greatly troubled with his head. On Thursday of last week he saw Dr. Yanderhoof, in the interest of his sister Mrs. Eacker, who was in ill health. The doctor advised him to procure some quinine and morphia; purchased twenty grains of the former and ten of the latter at the store of A, H. Sanford.
When he returned home he gave a portion of the morphine to Mrs. Eacker, keeping the remainder about five grains. Nothing was thought strange of this as he had frequently taken the drug for relief when oppressed.
Sunday he complained all day of his head and on Monday morning about four o'clock he was heard moving about his room. At 6:30 a. m. Mrs. Eacker passed his room and noticed that he was sleeping heavily; at eight o'clock she went to call him but noticed that he was still sleeping heavily and closed the blind, taking away the light concluding that he was not feeling well and she would let him sleep. Shortly after she felt uneasy and going up she turned him over, discovering that he was not asleep but breathing heavily. She called to Mr. Eacker who went to the room and immediately sent his son for Dr. Vanderhoof.
When he arrived the doctor immediately preceived the fact that he had taken morphine and that death would ensue. He died at twenty minutes past twelve. It is supposed that he had taken an overdose of the morphine none of the quantity which he had been found after death.
He leaves one daughter, wife of James S. Root. Mr. Cline was insured and at one time very heavily but a large share of the amount has elapsed through non paid premiums.

 - Obituary (Obituary (Ilion Citizen, NY, Thursday, December 27, 1917)
The death angel has again recorded another soul in the person of William I, Piper, who answered the summons calling him to the last home where he will meet his loved ones gone on before and where the strife and troubles of this world will be turned into the happy realization of what is anticipated by all who believe our stay here is only transient. The one thing necessary to secure our membership in that heavenly home is being a Christian and our desire and aim to be with Him who giveth and taketh away. We believe all is well with W. I. Piper, a man of character always interested in home, community and church. While he had been gradually failing for a long time he had been about the house as usual until last Wednesday, when in the evening he appeared to suffer a general collapse and since then had been confined to the bed. He retained consciousness to the last, knowing the members of his family until a short time before the end. Although nearly 80 years of age he had kept his mental vigor and interest in the affairs of the day having always been a great reader.
William Isaac Piper was born December 2, 1838, in the town of Frankfort, three quarters of a mile from the village. His parents were Isaac and Margaret Myers Piper, who had nine children. William was the youngest of the boys. The father was a farmer and an old settler. He held the office of justice of the peace in the town and was county superintendent of the poor. William was brought up on the farm and attended the district school, completing his education in Fort Plain. He came to the village of Frankfort, from the farm in 1855. His business in the village was that of clerk, working in the store where the postoffice was located. In 1869 he was appointed post master at Frankfort and held the office until 1885. When he had charge of the postoffice he was telegraph operator and express agent in the village. After the postoffice was taken from him he was employed as clerk in the car department of the West Shore [railroad] shops for nine years and after relinquishing that position he had no active occupation. In 1890 he was given charge of the local office of the Herkimer Telephone Company where he rendered service which was entirely satisfactory to the whole community. He held the office of justice of the peace in the town for several terms and was town clerk one term. He also took a deep interest in the school and was one of its trustees for nine years. He had at one time held the office of school collector. He was Republican in politics and an earnest supporter of the party. In 1871 he joined Olive Branch Lodge, No. 40. F. & A. M., of this place and was one of its oldest members and a past master of the lodge. In religion he was a Universalist, serving several years as superintendent, of the Sunday school and for many years was one of the trustees of the church here. Up to five years ago, when he had the misfortune to fall and break his hip, he had been enjoying good health and was down to the office daily, but he never fully recovered from the shock and weakness which followed that accident. He was a splendid neighbor and loyal friend and had a large circle of friends who will extend much sympathy to the family in their bereavement.
September 7, 1871 Mr. Piper married Miss Fannie Adams who died in 1892. He leaves surviving five children, a son Frank L. Piper of Fall River, Mass., and, four daughters, Anna B. Piper and Sarah M. Piper of this village, Mrs. John Soup of' Weehawken, N, J., and Mrs. B. E. Richardson of Mohawk, and six grandchildren

Groft and Hobart S. Ethridge. The body was placed in the vault and interment in the Vernon cemetery will be made later.
In the passing, of Mrs. George D. Torrey, Vernon loses another of its highly esteemed residents. Although an invalid for the past, eight years and much of the time confined to her bed or chair, she bore her sufferings without a murmur, thus exomplyfying the Christian life which she prfessed.
Margaret Elizabeth Ethbridge Torrey was born in Vernon, June 16, 1839, a daughter of the late William and Elizabeth Ethridge. She received her education in the old Vernon Academy.
On October 23, 1864, she was married to George D. Torrey and this village continued to be her home. For more than 60 years she was a member of the Methodist Kpiscopal Church, always identified with its various societies and actively engaged in the work as long as health permitted. She began singing in the choir when so small that she was forced to stand on a stool to bring her bight up with the other members of the choir. A teacher of a Sunday school class when but a young girl and continuing as long as she was able, she exerted a lasting influence for good over many who will long cherish the memory of their unassuming Christian teacher. This class has been named the Torrey Bible Class.
About a year ago the Woman's Home Missionary Society of the church contributed to a fund in her honor to be known as the Retirement Memorial Member of the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society for the support of a girl in India.
For years she was chairman of the parsonage committee.
There survive beside the husband, one daughter, S. Elizabeth Torrey at home and one son, Dr. F. D. Torrey, pastor of the Summerfield M. E. Church, Brooklyn, and one granddaughter, Frances Torrey, Brooklyn.
