Descendants of Caspar Getman

Notes

2. Johann Frederick Getman

- Johann Frederick is the "founding father" of the New York State Getman lines.

 - Due to mismanagement and unrealistic expectations for the production of pitch, Palatines were insufficiently supplied with goods, food and similar supplies. In October of 1712 fifty families moved to Schoharie where they had made arrangements with the Indians. Others followed in March of 1713. Seven dorfs (villages) were established during 1713.

... Mr Clark, the colonial secretary, under the date of May 30, 1711, informed the board of trade that the Palatines would not work at making pitch and tar, nor remain on the lands where they had been seated, on the Hudson River, but were intent on going to Schohary and settle on the lands the queen had ordered for them. In 1712 the insubordination had become so great that troops were called into the Palatine settlements to reduce the people to order. But Gov. Hunter failed in compelling an entire submission to his will, for in the fall of that year some of their leading men were sent to the Indians on the Schoharie creek to crave permission to settle among them, and this being granted, a Palatine migration to the Schoharie valley took place in the winter of 1712-13, comprising some forty or fifty families. Others followed, no doubt soon after. (A History of Herkimer County, Nathaniel S. Benton, J. Munsell, 78 State Street, Albany, NY, 1856 - pg. 36)

- Born in Germany, immigrated to East Camp and then to Schoharie Valley, NY, where they settled at Schmidt's Dorf at the approximate age of 19. He was approximately 32 years of age at the time his step-mother and father-in-law were issued land patents at Burnetsfield. Recently found records indicate he went to Burnetsfield settling on his step-mother's grant, moving to Stone Arabia after purchasing land there in 1743.
- Schmidt's Dorf is where the present villages of Schoharie is located.

Frederick Empie located on lots 86 and 88 of the Stone Arabia Patent in 1743 and in the same year, Frederick Getman (Kitman) and Johannes Bierman purchased land. ..."

The Getman family's arrival has incorrectly been reported in numerous publications as early as 1720. Frederick and his family settled in the Little Falls area about 1723 and remained there until land was purchased at Stone Arabia as indicated in the above record. He was listed as a resident of Burnetsfield when he purchased the Stone Arabia land from Hendrick Six in 1743, and was listed as a freeholder at Stonearabie in 1763.

 - The site of the Stone Arabia Getman homestead is presently in the Township of Ephratah, Fulton County, New York State. As boundaries have changed, this location has been progressively, Albany, Tryon, Montgomery and finally Fulton County. The region has also been referred to as Stone Arabia, which is presently an adjacent township in Montgomery County.

- Frederick was naturalized (as Frederick Kietman) at Mayor's Court in Albany, N.Y. on 22 Nov 1715.

Maria Johanna Bierman

 - NOTE: Another child, Elizabeth Getman b 1740 is mentioned in the Getman Genealogy book with the notation that it is questionable that she is a daughter of Frederick's. She is not included in this family.
