"Strict regulations stated that each man was to provide a firelock in good working order with a steel ramrod, a cleaning worm, twelve spare flints, and a tool to fix and knap them. … Many militiamen carried a large cow's horn to contain the mandated amount of course, main-charge powder and a smaller one with fine priming powder. These men used a leather bag to carry the prescribed twenty-three musket balls and wadding. Others had the preferred cartridge pouch with prepared paper cartridges, as used by the regulars. All were to bring an edged weapon, either a hanger, a bayonet, or a tomahawk.
